This has not resulted in improved basic skills, improved thinking, or improved self-esteem. We are at a time when our curriculum and our instruction speaks in the language of inquiry, constructivism, and active learning while many of our assessment methods listen only to the rapid recall of isolated facts. On the other hand, there were also those students who struggled to understand the concepts and felt lost unless I stopped teaching and went to their individual desks to help them.
